Cascadia Art Museum and Mukilteo Elementary School have partnered to reach nearly every student at the school.
Through Cascadia Art Museum’s Art for School Program, each grade level participated and created art.
Comprising two programs, the Art for School Program consists of Building Blocks of Art and Sharing Our Story.
Building Blocks of Art explores art concepts utilized by Northwest artists and each grade level learns about a specific art term, sees Northwest art, and creates their own art project.
Sharing Our Story is tailored to fourth graders, and addresses the history of Washington state and tribal sovereignty by exploring how society and history influenced Northwest artists. Students discover artists and see how an artists’ life is reflected in their art, and explore how history has impacted their own lives.
Adapted for the pandemic, museum educators taught over Zoom where the range and diversity of the art projects included fashioning animals out of clay, colored salmon heads, and swirly snails. They collaged a textured dinner plate and experimented with watercolor pencils and oil pastels. Cascadia Art Museum provided all the materials and teacher guides for the program
Cascadia Art for Schools is a free arts program for K-8 classrooms.
